Back in the summer, Kemi Badenoch described the UK’s net zero target for 2050 as “impossible.” It was a stark reminder of the scale of challenges we are still facing. And while she voiced what many quietly suspect, we believe the story doesn’t have to end there.
From our vantage point as a facilities management company overseeing some of London’s largest commercial buildings, we see both sides of the coin. It’s true that progress isn’t where it should be. Many properties are lagging behind the commitments set on paper. But it’s also true that the solutions exist — and with greater urgency and collaboration, the 2050 target remains within reach.
The Barriers We See
The hurdles still facing commercial estates are significant:
- Aging building stock: Retrofitting for efficiency is expensive and disruptive.
- Investment hesitancy: Sustainable upgrades are still seen by some as cost centres rather than value creators.
- Shared responsibility: Getting landlords, tenants, and service partners aligned is still a sticking point.
- Data blind spots: Many organisations lack clear, actionable insights into their true energy performance.
Left unaddressed, these issues will slow progress to a crawl.
The Opportunity Ahead
But here’s the flip side: buildings also represent one of the biggest opportunities for emissions reduction. Nearly 40% of UK carbon emissions come from the built environment. That means every improvement in heating, cooling, lighting, or energy management has an outsized impact.
We’re also seeing a powerful shift: many businesses, ourselves included, have chosen to bring forward their net zero goals to 2030. This is hugely encouraging. It demonstrates that organisations are not just waiting for government policy to dictate the pace — they’re stepping up, setting their own ambitious timelines, and proving what’s possible when sustainability is placed at the heart of business strategy.
These earlier commitments set a higher bar and, crucially, inject optimism into the wider conversation. They show that momentum is building and that net zero is not a distant aspiration but a live, active process happening now.
A Realistic but Positive Outlook
Is net zero by 2050 going to be straightforward? Absolutely not. The gap between ambition and delivery is still wide. But “impossible” underestimates the power of collective action. Every retrofit, every efficiency upgrade, every partnership built around sustainability moves us closer to closing that gap.
Our View
The built environment is both the challenge and the solution. As facilities service providers, we see every day the scale of the work still to be done. That’s why we’ve committed to bringing our own net zero target forward to 2030. It’s not easy, and we’re the first to admit we’re not there yet. The journey requires constant investment, tough decisions, and ongoing collaboration with clients and partners.
But we believe setting a nearer target is the right thing to do. It keeps us accountable, it forces action now rather than later, and it sends a clear message that change is possible if the will is there. Many other organisations are making the same choice, and that collective shift is where the real hope lies.
The truth is, 2050 will only be achievable if more businesses continue to take bold steps. By setting our sights on 2030, we’re holding ourselves accountable — and we believe the more businesses that take this approach, the closer we’ll all get to making net zero a reality.
